Little Brook Farm

SUSSEX CHICKEN CONSERVATION

As featured in

the Country Smallholder

Little Brook Farm is a 13-acre family run, natural farm offering rare breed chickens, eggs and honey for sale in Sussex.

We take pride in developing small-scale agricultural systems that progressively become self-funding. Put simply, through on-site feed production, breeding programmes, renewable energy, independent water supply, and local sale of produce, the farm relies on very little external support.

The systems developed at Little Brook Farm are intended to be low-input and self-funding, drawing on ecological design principles including those found in permaculture. We believe in farming as naturally as possible, working in harmony with nature to give all our animals a natural environment.

Heritage Protection

All our rare breed animals are ‘Priority‘ or ‘At Risk‘ pedigree stock, as determined by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust Watchlist. Through responsible stewardship of our animals, bees, and wild spaces, we blend traditional farming with modern ecological practices. Our mission is to protect Britain’s rural heritage while creating a model for self-sufficient, nature-positive living.

Light Sussex Chickens

The Light Sussex is one of Britain’s most established and versatile traditional chicken breeds, valued for its calm temperament, reliability, and dual-purpose qualities. Light Sussex hens are dependable layers of light-brown eggs, while also producing a well-fleshed carcass, which historically made the breed popular on small farms and estates. Hardy, docile, and excellent foragers, they fit naturally into sustainable and self-supporting setups.

Our breeding stock originates mainly from the retirement sale of Nick Smith’s flock. Nick Smith, from Herefordshire is a legendary breeder of the light Sussex.

Little Brook Honey

It’s not just chickens and sheep. Did you know we also have bee hives producing our very own Little Brook Farm honey.

Soay & Boreray Sheep

Perched on the remote islands of Scotland’s St Kilda archipelago, Boreray and Soay sheep represent some of the most ancient and resilient livestock breeds in Europe. Shaped by centuries of isolation, harsh Atlantic weather, and minimal human intervention, these small, primitive sheep retain traits that have largely disappeared from modern commercial breeds. Both breeds are now in decline and classified as ‘At Risk’.

Both breeds moult naturally and given their hardy temperament, can be left out on pasture all year round.

Works straight out the box, no phone required.
Chicken feeder ports open and close automatically on a daylight sensor. Removing the need to take the feeder in at night.

It’s not just rare breed conservation, we’re ecologically conscious too!

Our entire farm is run off-grid, using a combination of both solar and wind energy. Furthermore, we have our own water source through a careful combination of rain water harvesting and drilling our own borehole supply. Solar powered ground source heat pumps provide heating and a majority of our animal feed is grown on site. Nature is a great provider.
